DIY recipes for a fresh smelling home

Too often people focus solely on maintaining the cleanliness and diligently perform the regular procedures their weekly cleaning list is comprised of. However, they tend to neglect the bad smells or fail to identify where they come from. Opening the windows or turning the aspirator on while you cook can remedy the situation, but sometimes that’s not enough for eliminating the unpleasant odours. How about the pet smells or the terrible odour coming from the siphon? All these can be easily neutralized if you are willing to commit some time to make your own air freshener. It goes without saying that buying an air freshener from the supermarket is less time-consuming, but the truth is that commercial products just “hide” the odour for some time instead of eliminating it not speaking of the chemicals they contain. Here are a few easy recipes that can make your home as fresh smelling as if you have spent the entire day cleaning with the most high-grade detergents available on the market:
  • If you want to eliminate the bad smell produced during the preparation of the dinner, you just have to pour some vinegar into a bowl and place it onto the stove. Let the aroma spread around the house. This is an easy trick that can neutralize even strong smell such as fried fish or onions.
  • It is a common knowledge that carpets absorb all kinds of unpleasant smells including cigarette and pet smell. In order to neutralize them, you have to include yet another procedure to your weekly carpet cleaning routine. Sprinkle some baking soda onto the carpet and let it sit overnight. Then, suck it with the vacuum cleaner. If necessary, repeat the procedure. If it doesn`t work for your case and you are dealing with a worse case of a smelly carpet, you are advised to call the professional carpet cleaners as the methods they apply eliminate the odours completely and leave your rug freshly-scented.
  • If you use a fabric softener, you can pour two cups into an old pan, add some water and put the mixture on the stove. The pleasant scent will spread through the entire house.
  • You might have heard about the great properties of the essential oils but you have not tried even one recipe yet? Well, it is time to change that because essential oils are irreplaceable when it comes to making your home smell fresh. The easiest recipe requires you to pour some water into a spray bottle and add a few drops of the essential oil you prefer. The more drops you add, the longer the scent will linger. Experts in upholstery cleaning advise that except for their amazing scent, essential oils like tea tree can be used to eliminate mould and mildew.

  • If you are willing to spend some more time on making your homemade air freshener, you can try the following: get a jar and fill it with rice. Then, add some essential oil and place the jar in the living room.
  • If you are looking for a method for getting rid of the stale odour in the closet, go ahead and get lavender oil. Soak cotton balls in the oil and place them in the corners of the closet. Alternatively, you can make the aforementioned air freshener and mix water and lavender oil.
  • If you are unwilling to spend money on essential oils, you can use an less expensive solution and squeeze a lemon. The lemon juice can help you lift the grease from the oven and it also smells good. That’s the reason why some people place lemon or orange peels around the house.
  • If you like the smell of a cinnamon, you can try the following. Put a few cinnamon sticks or sprinkle some cinnamon into boiling water and simmer for a couple of minutes. Open the doors so the smell can spread around the house or carefully divide the solution into cups, place one in each room and let the smell evaporate.
  • Coffee is also an excellent neutraliser for bad smells. Buy coffee beans and grind them yourself. Freshly ground coffee not only tastes better but it will also makes your house smell great.
  • If you are a passionate cook and you love surprising your friends and family with delicious desserts, then, you should know that if you bake something, the unpleasant food smell will be eliminated right away. There are some smart housewives that keep cookie dough in the freezer and when they expect guests they just toss it in the oven – the whole house smells like freshly-baked cookies plus you have treats for your company.
Making the house fresh-smelling is the final touch up that speaks volumes of you as a homeowner or a tenant. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on air fresheners and inhale the toxic particles they contain. The aforementioned methods are efficient and inexpensive. So, make a trip to the nearest store and get the supplies necessary for preparing any of these recipes. You will see that your efforts will pay off.
